Manufacturer DescriptionDORC's implementation of the Michelson Interferometer incorporates an electronically controlled zoom objective. Fringes created by introducing an internal reference path can be used to quantify the surface topography of connector or fiber ends. When measuring FC-PC style connectors, concentric ring patterns will be produced, indicating both the center and radius of curvature. The parfocal/parcentral zoom ensures that the image and reference paths remain in focus throughout its range. The user may easily switch between inspection and interferometric modes at any magnification without re-focusing. Details and imperfections that might be missed using multiple fixed objectives are easily captured. Using optional chucks, the ZX-l can measure anything from a single fiber or connector to a ribbon fiber. The large monitor combined with ease of use make the ZX-l ideal for volume testing in production environments. The systems fully enclosed design prevents contamination of the optics, greatly reducing maintenance.
DORC's ZX-1 micro is the world's first portable non-contact interferometer designed specifically to inspect and measure the surface topography of fiberoptic connectors. The hand-held (HH) unit has a built-in LCD monitor to provide inherently eye-safe viewing of potentially "live" connectors. Conventional direct viewing microscopes usually contain laser filters to absorb or reflect the invisible laser radiation. However, it is impossible for the operator to know if such precautions are in place and providing effective protection. In the inspection mode, the operator will clearly see any contamination or surface scratches on the ferrule or fiber endface. Instantly switching to interferometric mode reveals the connectors surface topography. Defects in the polished shape including radius of curvature, apex offset, angle and undercut or protrusion can all be evaluated.
The ZX-1 micro BT was designed to offer compact interferometric/inspection capabilities in desktop locations where it has been cost prohibitive to do so in the past.
